Also, linguistic revelation today at the prayer halaqa - ibada comes from the same root as ‘abd. So a way to look at being amatuAllah is being a person who is worshipful, defined by their worship. Much fuller and deeper meaning for a person who’s view of ‘abd is tainted by the primarily negative connotations of the word.
Only took me 12 years…wonder what I’ll figure out in the next 12?

The Shimmering Light:
In Remembrance of the Prophet of Intercession
by Habib Umar ibn Salim
It is sung by the students of knowledge beautifully, it includes verses of the Qur’an and sending peace and blessings upon our beloved Prophet ﷺ.
It is hoped that the recitor gains benefit and sends greetings and prayer upon our Prophet ﷺ & thus fulfils the command in our Holy Qur”an (33:56) to
send peace and blessing upon our beloved Prophet ﷺ.
Also, know that it is in the authentic Hadith (Sahih Muslim) that the one who sends greetings and prayer on the Prophet ﷺ, Allah sends and gives that person 10 times the blessings, and bestows His Rahma (Mercy) upon such a person.
The last section of it (Mawlid of Habib Umar bin Salim -10), contains recitation of the Dua by another great scholar and teacher (from Tarim as well), Shaykh Habib Ali al-Jifri.

Half Priced Books had their end of the year 20% off sale and I managed to go to two different stores :) Alas, you will not see most of my book haul because Castiel is an attention hog. But, he’s adorable and I love him, so he is forgiven.
I got quite a few volumes to add to my non-salafi islamic book library:
And a few cat books:
Democratic U.S. Representative Keith Ellison (Minnesota) wins re-election by a solid margin.
And he’s Muslim.
And, pending my house closing on Friday, he’ll be my rep :)
If religious authority was strictly about quoting texts and dressing a certain way, the khawarij would be our examples. The Prophet (sa) mentioned that their reading of the Qur’an and fasting would put the companions (ra) to shame. But he described the Khawarij saying, “They are the worst of creation.” There is more to it, as noted by Imam al-Shaf’i, then quoting texts and fashion. As ‘Umar (ra) implored Abu Musa, “Understand! Understand! Understand!Suhaib Webb (via nachidasmind)
still debating whether to hear suhaib webb speak tomorrow.
i don’t know. it’s for islamic awareness week. what does it say about the state of muslims today when they go to see something that’s geared more towards non-muslims?
it’s almost like we just stopped trying.
we are more willing to go for small sound bytes than to sit down and study texts in greater length. is that seeking knowledge?
that’s my controversial statement of the day.
It’s really what you make of it though. If you limit yourself only to these types of lectures, you will miss out on so much. But, you can utilize it as an inspiration and motivation to dig deeper.
There may be a gem buried in the lecture that you’ve never heard before. That’s why we keep reading the Qur’an, keep looking at the sirah - you notice something new every time you read it.
Sadly, harsh-hearted haters among our community are driving people from the mosques and making the most beautiful teaching in the world appear ugly.

I hate to break it to the tumblr muslimeen, but I’m pretty sure Ibtihaj Muhammad didn’t make the Olympic team. She’s awesome and a world class competitor for sure, but US Fencing doesn’t list her as a member of the Olympic team.
Plus, no mention of the Olympics on her FB page.
Just got this in my email inbox - Beginning soon! 6:30 pm EST. From Lamppost Productions

Question: Is it a sunna or bida to worship on the night of the 15th of Sha`ban?
Answer: In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
The majority of Sunni scholarship considers the 15th of Sha’ban to be a blessed day and night. It is recommended to fast and spend some or all of the night in worship.
It is clearly stated in the fiqh works of the madhhabs that it is recommended to worship on this night. Even Ibn Taymiyya says this.
No specific worship, however, has been authentically established for this night, and Imam Nawawi (in al-Majmu`), Imam Buhuti (in Kashshaf al-Qina`), Imam Shurunbulali (in al-Shurunbulaliyya) and others have mentioned that prayers such as the 100-rakat Salat al-Raghaib are blameworthy innovations.
…
2. Ibn Taymiyya was asked about the prayer of mid-Sha`ban [i.e. the night of].
He answered:
If a person prays that night alone, or in a select congregation, as many groups (tawaif) of the Early Muslims used to do, it is very good.
As for gathering in the mosque for a particular fixed prayer, such as gather for 100 rakats in which 1,000 QulhuwaAllahuAhad are read every time, this is a reprehensible innovation, which none of the imams have allowed. [Ibn Taymiyya, al-Fatawa al-Kubra, 2; 222-138]
3. This corresponds to what Imam Nawawi mentioned in his Majmu`, where he also quoted Imam al-Shafi`i from the latters al-Umm that it has reached him that there are 5 nights when dua is answered, one of them being the night of the 15th of Sha`ban.
